1950s Yarralumla Duplex Gets a Sympathetic Extension and Renovation
RENOVATION & EXTENSION
We undertook a remarkable project in Yarralumla, ACT, breathing new life into a classic 1950s duplex. The goal? To blend modern functionality with the home’s original era, all while promoting energy efficiency.
Respecting the Past, Embracing the Future:
- Era-Appropriate Extension: A well-designed extension added a new kitchen, living area, and an extra bedroom to accommodate a growing family. Importantly, the extension echoed the architectural style of the 1950s, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic.
- Energy Efficiency Matters: Upgrading the home’s energy efficiency was a key focus, ensuring comfort and sustainability for the future.
- 50s Flair Preserved: The interior of the extension stayed true to the original era. V-J boards lined the kitchen and living space, complemented by handcrafted circular handles on the joinery. Even the architraves and window details were meticulously designed to match the 1950s style.
- Sustainable Touches: Recycled timber posts from Thor’s Hammer were used for the outdoor deck extension, creating a seamless connection to the house and adding a touch of sustainable luxury.
The result is a stunning renovation that celebrates the home’s heritage while equipping it for modern living. The Yarralumla duplex now boasts a beautiful blend of functionality, style, and environmental consciousness.
