Ainslie's Historic Kit Home Gets a Modern Makeover

Renovation

Nestled in Fairbridge Crescent, Ainslie, lies a unique piece of Canberra’s history. This charming dwelling is one of the six hundred ex-heritage listed kit homes brought from England in the 1950s. While the home retained its original 50s charm, it craved a modern update to improve functionality and comfort.

CJC Constructions, in collaboration with Architecture Republic, undertook a comprehensive interior renovation, breathing new life into every room. Here are the key highlights:

  • Soaring Living Space: Removal of the original trusses created a dramatic raked ceiling in the living area, instantly opening up the space and adding a sense of grandeur.
  • Preserving the Past, Embracing the Light: The original facade remained untouched, while the living room windows were expanded and a full-wall stacker door installed. This clever design approach integrated modern elements for a brighter and more open ambience.
  • Australian Connection: Adjoining the living area, a spacious deck crafted from beautiful Australian spotted gum extends the living space outdoors. A custom-designed built-in seat invites relaxation, while the surrounding mature trees create a tranquil oasis.

The result? A stunning transformation that honors the home’s heritage while equipping it for modern living. This project exemplifies CJC Constructions’ ability to seamlessly blend history with contemporary design.

Happy Results, Happy Clients

Chris and Rhiannon and their team from CJC Construction have been exceptional. We have been living overseas and wanted to be able to move in with our boys as soon as we got back. Chris and Rhiannon understood the importance of a smooth transition to us and ensured our home was finished on time, on budget and down to the last detail. It has exceeded our expectations – we love living here and can’t recommend them more highly.

We were living in another country for the entire renovation and so were impressed by and grateful for both the co-construct system, and Chris and Rhiannon’s commitment to honest, clear, timely communication.

Chris and Rhiannon work hard to have first class relationships and engage people who deliver with skill and care accross the trades. A number of people have told me they “don’t cut corners” and this is evident in the finished product.

Elements of the house that CJC designed, for example the seat on the deck, are beautiful and we love them. We had several changes during the renovation – for example in window size and location – and all of these were managed within the schedule.

And they went above and beyond to ensure we were moving into a “finished” home, including coordinating and working with our landscape gardener, installing our light fittings, setting up sheds and clotheslines and even building and painting our cubby house and fence!

The transformation of our home has been remarkable and we are very grateful for their thoughtfulness, skill, attention to detail and quality, commitment to understanding and delivering what we wanted and close management of the budget. We couldn’t have asked for a better result or better service.
