Apartment Renovation in Turner
Renovation
In the heart of Turner, ACT, we recently undertook an exciting renovation of a three-bedroom apartment. The goal? To blend the unique character of the late 70s and early 80s with modern-day functionality. Our clients wanted to preserve the building’s original charm while creating a space that feels fresh, contemporary, and practical for everyday living. Here’s how we made it happen.
Our clients’ vision was clear, they wanted the apartment to retain the architectural and design elements of the late 70s and early 80s, ensuring it remained in harmony with the building’s original style. At the same time, they sought the convenience and functionality of a modern home. The challenge was to strike a perfect balance between retro aesthetics and current-day living standards.
One of the biggest transformations was relocating the kitchen. We moved it into the living space, opening up the area for a more modern and spacious layout. By converting the original kitchen into a large pantry, we maximized storage while keeping the retro charm alive. The inclusion of natural Italian stone for the benchtops added a touch of elegance while maintaining durability and practicality.
The bathrooms, while structurally sound, needed a cosmetic upgrade. We refaced them with a focus on simplicity, adding subtle nods to the 70s/80s style without overwhelming the senses. Clean lines, timeless fixtures, and understated elegance defined these spaces.
To truly capture the essence of the late 70s and early 80s, we installed VJ (vertical joint) boards in the living area. This design element added both texture and a visual connection to the retro era, bringing warmth and character into the space. It’s these finer details that set the tone and make the space feel authentic yet refreshed.
A key feature throughout the renovation was the use of natural Italian stone for the benchtops. The stone’s timeless quality paired beautifully with the retro design elements, creating a seamless blend of old and new. Its natural finish provided a durable, high-quality surface that added a luxurious touch to the apartment without straying from the client’s desired aesthetic.
By respecting the past while embracing the present, we were able to deliver a renovation that our clients love, one that honors the history of the building while offering contemporary functionality. This Turner apartment is now a beautiful fusion of retro charm and modern convenience, and we’re proud to have been part of its transformation.

Happy Results, Happy Clients
“We were very nervous to embark on our first ever renovation project while still living overseas. We needed a builder that we could trust to handle everything on our behalf and to be transparent and open about the process. We could not have found a more perfect fit for us with CJC Constructions.
We have nothing but positive things to say about our experience with Chris, Rhiannon and their team. Nobody can believe that we completed a whole renovation without stress, cost blow-outs or disasters. In the capable hands of CJC, the whole project was managed professionally, on time and within budget. Chris’ communication with us was excellent and his sound advice was greatly appreciated every step of the way. We absolutely love our new home – the quality and care of the CJC team is evident in every element.
As we live in a block of units, we were concerned about disruption to others in the building. Each of our neighbours has taken time to pass on their thanks for the respect and care shown by the CJC team.
We have no hesitation in recommending CJC Constructions to anyone looking to build or renovate in Canberra. We are so grateful to have found them!”
