Cook's Classic Charmer Gets a Modern Makeover for Retirement

RENOVATION

A long-time couple in Cook, ACT, decided to breathe new life into their beloved 1960s home. Their goal? To create a comfortable and functional space for their retirement years, while preserving the home’s original character. CJC Constructions expertly delivered this vision.

Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future:

  • Modern Touches for Clean Living: The renovation prioritised energy efficiency and clean living. Upgraded appliances and highly efficient, triple-glazed Logikhaus windows with modern features were seamlessly integrated, maintaining the home’s 60s aesthetic. The clients had the option to choose colors that complemented the original wood frames.
  • Sustainable Practices: We constructed an eco-friendly bike shed with a stylish 30-degree pitched roof, aligning with the client’s values.

Preserving the 60s Charm:

  • Timber Beams Take Center Stage: The original flat roof design and exposed timber beams were meticulously maintained and painted, adding a touch of nostalgia.
  • Pop-Up Delight: A strategically placed pop-up roof in the kitchen captures northern sunlight, brightening the south-facing space and adding a touch of architectural interest. Electrically operated windows ensure proper ventilation during hot weather.

Creating a Seamless Flow:

  • Open and Inviting: Large sliding doors replaced existing walls, opening up the living and dining area and fostering a sense of spaciousness.
  • Repurposed Charm: Original timber framing was cleverly reused to create custom shelves in a nook adjacent to the kitchen, adding a touch of character and functionality.
  • Indoor-Outdoor Connection: A stunning 3.3-meter wide blackbutt timber deck extends along the side and back of the house, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living and allowing the homeowners to enjoy their beautiful garden.

Stylish Touches:

  • Warm Flooring: Blackbutt floating wood flooring with a matte-satin finish replaced the old carpets, creating a cohesive flow throughout the home.
  • Artful Illumination: Specifically chosen light fixtures were installed to highlight the client’s exquisite artwork and complement the new wall colors.
  • Spanish Flair: The pièce de résistance – handmade Spanish and Moroccan tiles were installed as a splashback in the kitchen and bathrooms, adding a pop of color and a touch of global flair.

The result? A stunning renovation that celebrates the home’s 1960s heritage while equipping it with modern amenities and functionality, perfectly suited for the couple’s retirement years.
